37: How To Stop Procrastinating

Today we are talking about procrastination. Stick around to learn the two reasons most of us procrastinate and a step-by-step approach to overcoming this annoying habit.

I used to be an expert procrastinator - if I could put it off, I would! No matter what the activity, it was put off if it wasn’t fun. Because procrastinating worked out for me, this behavior was reinforced in my brain. And sometimes the task I decided to put off would resolve itself, which just reinforced my procrastination!

Our brains are great at reinforcing actions that keep us in our comfort zone. The short term comfort that we receive is offset by the long term negative consequences of falling into the habit of not taking care of our responsibilities. Besides, your brain will continuously remind you of that task you were supposed to finish because your brain is keeping this activity on your to-do list. After all, it’s not complete. This process takes up valuable brain space and resources.

In this episode, find out why procrastination wastes your brain resources, why we procrastinate, how to free up your mental resources, and the two reasons we procrastinate.
